The Outstanding Exhibitor awards are handled by 4-H and not the Fair so there is nothing about it in the Fair's book. We do have and an arrangement with the Fair to have the Livestock Office collect the applications which are being turned in.

The forms and directions can be found on our website or can be picked up at the 4-H Office.

http://cestanislaus.ucdavis.edu/4-H_Program/Livestock_Program_Information.htm (Please note: due dates are subject to change if the Fair changes their schedule in 2008)

Any member who wishes to apply for Outstanding Exhibitor must submit:

1. FORM A (see web page for forms) plus: · A 2-page story relating only to this project. This story should include how you started the project, how it is financed, problems encountered and overcome, size and scope of the project and your plans for the future.

· An up-to-date copy of the Advanced Livestock Report Form

· These forms should be put into a folder and taken to the Fair Livestock Office before 4 p.m. on Monday, the first day of the Junior Show.

2. FORM B -- Animal Placing Score Sheet -- must be completed and returned to the Fair Livestock office before Friday, no later than 9 a.m.

An interview will be conducted on Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. Please be at your project area. If "Form B" is not submitted to the Livestock Office, or if the judges are not able to find you, your name will be removed from their list. Member will be scored on the following: 1. The information you supply on Form B (parts I & II)

2. The neatness & attractiveness of your exhibit (animals, stall area & your appearance) (pt III)

3. Your knowledge of your project based on an oral interview (part IV)

4. The records submitted (story and advanced livestock form) (part V)

5. Your performance at the fair

There are 2 levels:

ADVANCED -- For member of this project for 4 or more years -

OR- who have won Novice Outstanding Exhibitor in this specie.

NOVICE -- 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year members of this project who have NEVER won Outstanding Exhibitor in this specie. JoAnn Ratto 4-H Program Representative UCCE Stanislaus

I have a very interesting story about a young boy in 4H during 1960. His father had a stroke, and his pregnant mother took ill. This young boy took his 4H Black Angus and sold it to pay the hospital bill for his new baby sister & mother. If anyone has photos from 1960 4H events that may have young Robert Ray Johnston and his 4H prize Black Angus, please contact me. My phone number is 916-521-9874.

Many years ago when my now grown children were babies you had a series of magazines or newletters that could were mailed out on a monthly or semi monthly basis for parents. If I remember correctly. When registering for this service one put in the age of the child or due date if pregnant and the issues corresponded to expected growth and development of the child. if this service is still available I would like to sign up the parents of my grandchild that is due in November. I found the service comforting and very helpful as a young parent and I think they would also benefit from it. If I remember correctly there was a small fee for the service to cover the cost of postage and printing etc. If you still have anything like that or any other ideas or services for first time parents or grandparents I would really appreciate hearing about them. Thank you. I would also be interested in inforamtion on money management. There used to be a Master Shopper's Program, I think that is what it was called any info would be appreciated.

What you have described sounds like it may have been part of our EFNEP program many years ago. I'm sorry to say that we do not have anything like that now. For information on money management, (and since you have internet access), you can read the "LifeSkills" newsletter online at this address: http://www.danrpeoplelinks.ucr.edu/nb3/nb3.html We no longer mail it from our office.

I hope to be moving to your county later this summer. I am a master gardener through the Extension Office in Jefferson County in Colorado. Do you have a master gardener program in your county? If not, do you know of a county extension office in the surrounding counties that does have a program? Thank You for your help.

Stanislaus County does not have a Master Gardener Program. The nearest programs in the San Joaquin Valley are in Fresno and Sacramento Counties.
